Neon Indian to Play Yugong Yishan, Nov 19

Split Works were gearing up for another season of gigs, fresh off their Black Rabbit Festival in Shanghai last month. Texan, Alan Palomo’s hip day-glo pop project Neon Indian will be coming to Beijing next month (Nov 19) at Yugong Yishan. It will no doubt be a great show for anyone into the whimsical vibes of the pseudo-psychedelic synth pop sub-genre, chillwave that includes artists like Washed Out or Toro Y Moi.

Tomorrow (Oct 16) is the release of his third record, titled Vega Intl. Night School, which is the first release we’ve seen from Alan since the Errata Index EP in 2013. From checking out a couple of the singles it has sleazy but cool vibe going on. There are characteristics of Wang Chung circa the To Live and Die in L.A. soundtrack, along with the questionable morals of Soft Cell’s Non-Stop Ecstatic Dancing and some funky elements reminiscent of late 80s Prince that are pretty infectious. It’s a delicious combo of sultry synthetic noise swashes and sampled pan flutes that will bring the party but then make you feel gross and introspective. Pitchfork has already included it in their Best New Music round up.
