Cui Jian, Black Panther, Tang Dynasty to Play in Beijing Saturday Night

If rock music had a hall of fame in China, then its first three entrants would be playing together at the Workers' Gymnasium Saturday, November 21.

Cui Jian, China's godfather of rock, will be joined by the country's two most popular bands from the 1990s, Black Panther and Tang Dynasty, along with Taiwan pop star Chao Ch'uan (Jeff Chao), whose song "I'm a Little Bird" was a default number one hit for years until Celine Dion's "My Heart Will Go On" came along.

Cui emerged as China's first real rock star in the late 1980s, and was banned from performing in his native Beijing until just a few years ago. Black Panther (Hei Bao) was originally fronted by Dou Wei, whose solo career took an entirely different direction from the band's pop metal sound. Tang Dynasty was China's first big metal band, and once featured a Chinese-American guitarist named Kaiser Kuo. All are a bit longer in the tooth now, and their audience quite a bit richer, but it should be a good show.

All are playing in support of the upcoming film release of Chinese film Mr. Six. The bill promises "mystery guests," so we'll see who pops up.
