Sanyouding Expands to Southwest Wudaoying With Fresh Sashimi and Great Teppanyaki
Last summer, we went to check out the Sanyouding by Yonghegong Exit D, and we approved. Last week, we discovered that they had opened a second store, with a focus on Teppanyaki, just off Jiangchang Hutong, the alley that divides Arrow Factory Taproom and the popular-with-foreigners Guanshuyuan compound.
The interior is similar to the original location: cozy and wood-heavy, with space for about 20 upstairs, and including seating at the teppanyaki bar, about half of that downstairs. There's plenty of privacy upstairs, with cute scrollers and Japanese-style curtains dividing tables.
Eager to trial all parts of the menu, and coming with eight empty stomachs, we went in for the sashimi set with five types (RMB 298), which was presented on a huge cutting board with a wasabi-chunk that'll trick you into thinking it's actually avocado. There were gambas, smaller prawns, squid, salmon, and surf clams: all incredibly fresh, and worth every yuan. Silence fell upon our table as we devoured this bad boy. Our only issue here was that the sashimi was actually the last thing to arrive, which surely, it shouldn't do considering everything was raw.
We also went for two rolls, the Sanyouding roll (RMB 88 for an entire roll consisting of eight pieces), and the salmon with avocado roll (RMB 76 for eight pieces). These rolls, were also absolutely worth the price tag, tasted great, and are extremely filling. If you're not too into mayonnaise, it is important to let them know though, as many of their rolls come slathered in the stuff.
Off the teppanyaki part of the menu, we got the zucchini (RMB 20), the tofu (RMB 28), the okra (RMB 38), the broccoli (RMB 38), and the beef slices (RMB 68). While the experience would've been more interactive had we been sitting at the bar downstairs, the vegetables and beef were well presented regardless, and all came out full of flavor, baked in delicious, runny butter.
We can see this becoming a hit with the Guanshuyuan crowd, as it is not only a great place to get a quick lunch (they have good-value lunch deals Monday-Friday 11.30am-1.30pm, and 11.30am-5pm on Sundays which warrant another visit, with udon and meat or fish dishes available from RMB 48), but also a wonderful place for celebrations or romantic dates.
