[Update] Hani Gejiu Closes Down After Problems With Landlord

[Update Jun 8, 2.20pm] Further conversation with Zhou confirms that her and her business partner are pulling out of the venture, but that the restaurant will continue under a different name although it is uncertain what changes will be made to the menu. Zhou adds that the restaurant Hani Gejiu as we have known it will be opening up elsewhere as soon as a new location is found.

Popular Yunnan restaurant Hani Gejiu was confirmed Wednesday to have closed after troubles with the landlord. The landlord, apparently keen to get in on the success, wanted to increase rent and also demanded a lump sum, owner Sue Zhou told the Beijinger.

In some situations it can turn out that a landlord does this when they've received an offer from a competing tenant who wants to pay them more.

Operating for three years, Hani Gejiu was popular for celebrations or visitors from abroad. The eatery, located close to the Drum and Bell Towers, was especially well-liked for its great atmosphere and set meals using Hani minority dishes, such as fried goat's cheese and dishes prepared using tofu skin. The shredded chicken lemon salad, pictured below, was also particularly delicious.

Zhou, one of the brains behind this restaurant, confirms that the search for a new location is on already. "We are looking for a new location, but as you know in Beijing it is not easy." Stay with theBeijinger.com for developments.
