Get Back in the Habit: See 'Sister Act: The Musical,' Aug 18-20 at the Century Theater

Plenty of heavenly sounding show tunes will be sung for an audience with congregation-level enthusiasm from August 18-20. More than a few less than saintly chuckles will also surely be had. After all, we're talking about the Tony-nominated musical version of the cheeky 1992 movie comedy Sister Act here.

And while rib-tickling funny woman Whoopi Goldberg won't be present to recreate the hit film's comedic magic, this stage rendition has the added bonus of music written by veteran composer Alan Menken (of Beauty and the Beast and other Disney films). That may very well be for the best though, considering The Chicago Tribune's review saying the play was "all in the service of musical fun." And while The Hollywood Reporter complained that Goldberg's shoes proved "tough to fill" on a comedic level, it nevertheless applauded the play for having some "strong numbers" along with the "winning presence" of some of its cast members.

At the very least, this musical should tide Goldberg fans over until she returns with another theatrical sequel, though she's mulling taking over directing duties instead of starring. Show tunes fans, meanwhile, will likely be more fixated on the production's disco-indebted songs, along with what the Tribune describes as choreography that "gets the habits flying and the booties shaking with comic invention."
