Iconic American Burger Joint Five Guys to Open in Beijing in September
Five Guys Burgers and Fries, which over the past three decades has risen from a family-run burger joint in Virginia to one of the most celebrated chains in the United States, is on its way to Beijing.
Slated for a September opening in Xidan's Galeries Lafayette mall, Five Guys will serve their signature burgers, fries and other junk food that Beijingers will no doubt scarf down in massive quantities (while at the same time complaining that Western food is so unhealthy).
The chain's appeal comes from the simplicity of its menu, and the fact that every burger can be ordered with custom toppings (at no additional cost). It also receives high marks for the fact that they don't use frozen beef. In 2017 it was named the United States' favorite and most well-known burger brand by the Harris Poll, beating out heavyweights like McDonald's, In-n-Out Burger, and Burger King.
The venue looks to be the revered burger chain's first to open in mainland China (sorry, Shanghai), following the opening of a branch in Hong Kong in November last year. However, Xidan ain’t exactly expat central, and one can only hope the first Beijing locale does well enough to open closer to the east side of the city.
Considering that the Five Guys opening is still three long months away, you’ll need to satiate your burger craving elsewhere. Luckily there are over 100 choices out there in Beijing, and there is no better place to start looking than by checking out one of the top 12 burgers in Beijing as rated by you in the 2018 Burger Cup.
