Chinese Films and Filmmakers Banned from Participating in Golden Horse Awards
Early last Wednesday, China Film News reported that China’s Film Bureau has banned Chinese filmmakers and films from participating in this year’s Taipei Golden Horse Awards on account of growing political tension. As of Jul 31, 685 films, including 148 narrative features, have been submitted to the Awards, a significant decrease compared with last year’s submissions. Several mainland Chinese films have reportedly been submitted, although such claims are denied by those films' representatives. The award ceremony of this year’s Golden Horse will take place in Taipei on Nov 23. Hong Kong filmmaker Johnnie To is charing this year’s jury. Last year, Zhang Yimou took home the Golden Horse for best director for his film Shadow (pictured above).

Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham in China for ‘Hobbs & Shaw’ Premiere
Fast & Furious: Hobbs & Shaw, the spin-off from The Fast & Furious franchise premiered in Beijing on Aug 6. The film’s director David Leitch and two lead actors Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham attended the premiere event and interacted with Chinese fans. This is David Leitch’s third directorial work. Previously, he directed Deadpool 2 and Atomic Blonde. Fast & Furious: Hobbs & Shaw is set to open in Chinese theaters on Aug 23.

Belgian Animated Film ‘The Queen’s Corgi’ Set for Aug 30 China Release
Today, a set of Chinese posters for animated film The Queen’s Corgi were released with the announcement that the film has been scheduled to released in Chinese theaters on Aug 30. The Queen’s Corgi is an English-language Belgian animated feature film produced by nWave Pictures and directed by Ben Stassen and Vincent Kesteloot. Based on Queen Elizabeth II and her corgi’s friendship, the film follows a corgi named Rex, who gets lost and tries to find his way back.

Disney’s ‘The Lion King’ Gets One-Month Theatrical Extension in China
It has been announced that Disney’s musical drama film The Lion King has been given the permission to extend its theatrical run in China for one month to Sep 10. The Lion King was released in China on Jul 12, which is one week prior to its US release. So far, the film has raked in RMB 820 million. Worldwide, its cumulative box office has so far reached over USD 1.2 billion.

‘Nezha’ Beats ‘Monster Hunt’ to Enter China’s Box Office Top 10 of All Time
Chinese animated film Nezha has been swiping China box office by storm since it was released on Jul 26. After becoming the highest-grossing animated film of all time in Chinese history, the film beat fantasy drama film Monster Hunt earlier in the week to become the 10th highest-grossing film of all time in China. As of writing, the cumulative box office of Nezha has exceeded RMB 2.5 billion. With this momentum, Nezha will likely also beat films such as Hello Mr. Billionaire and The Fate of the Furious. Chinese Film ‘So Long My Son’ Invited for a Special Screening at The Golden Globes
This year, Golden Globes organizer Hollywood Foreign Press Association is partnering with American Film Archives to showcase a series of foreign language films that won awards at major international film festivals over the past year. After a round of selection, HFPA narrowed down to a list of four films, including Chinese filmmaker Wang Xiaoshuai’s Song Long My Son.
