Where to Enjoy China's Favorite Luxury Autumnal Food: Hairy Crab
If you haven't heard, hairy crabs are a big f-ing deal in China. Native to Eastern China, the most sought-after specimens come from Yangcheng Lake in Jiangsu province, and people pay small fortunes to feast on the creamy and buttery golden roe within.
Named after the fine hair on their claws, hairy crabs (大闸蟹 dàzháxiè) can only be caught for two months each year – around late September to November. Their short season and resultant limited supply make the crabs highly lucrative for sellers and ruthlessly hunted at the dinner table by almost everyone else.
Despite the fact that we are quite far from the source, and that there are plenty of "fake" crabs out there, Beijing restaurants are stocked to the rafters with the good stuff. Here are our picks for some of the best places to enjoy this seasonal delicacy in Beijing – get them at their prime time!
