Today is International Children’s Day, and while nowadays it's usually celebrated in Beijing with kids parties, school performances, and family-friendly dining deals, the holiday was originally established to encourage families and teaching institutions around the world to raise awareness of the welfare of children. In China, some companies even go as far as to give parents the day off to spend with their kids.

The holiday dates back to 1950 and is also known as the International Day for Protection of Children, established by the Women’s International Democratic Federation in Moscow. In most parts of the world, Children’s Day is celebrated on Jun 1 as opposed to the official United Nations World Children’s Day, which is celebrated on Nov 20.

While this year’s Children’s Day events aren’t as action-packed as previous years due to COVID-19 restrictions, there are still plenty of options around town to make the day special for kids.
