TGIF: An Intimate Show With Joe Wong, Roundabout's Book Fair, and a Run Through History
The weekend is here! Time for fun, relaxation, and recharging the ol' batteries ahead of *gulp* Monday morning's alarm clock. Luckily enough, there’s plenty of fun stuff to keep you occupied over the weekend that doesn't necessarily involve getting blitzed. Our weekend roundup offers you some of the best.
Sep 5-6: Roundabout Book Fair
Head over to Roundabout this weekend and pick up some new reads from a selection of thousands of donated books, with all proceeds going to the various children's organizations supported by Roundabout. Both kid's and adult's books are available (in Chinese, English, and other languages), starting from just RMB 1. Free. 10am-3pm. Roundabout (Guantang Plaza).
Sep 5-6: Paulaner Riverside Market
This weekend, Paulaner Bräuhaus is celebrating 6 Million brews by throwing a two-day Riverside Market featuring local craft stalls, live music, delicious food, and, of course, beer. Sep 5: A Night of Standup Comedy with Joe Wong
Good news for all you Comedy Club China fans: the biggest name in the China comedy scene, Joe Wong, will be performing two small shows at Sculpting in Time Cafe in Sanlitun on Sep 5 (shows at 7pm and 9pm). Find out why Joe has his own CCTV show "是真的吗?" (Shìzhēndema, Is it true?), why he has been on David Letterman, Ellen, Stephen Colbert, and featured at the Correspondents Dinner to poke fun at presidential nominee and fellow Joe, Joe Biden. Sep 5: African Masai Jewelry Workshop
Join this workshop at The Hutong exploring traditional handmade jewelry of the style worn by Masai people. You'll get to design your own Masai choker fringe statement necklace, wire bracelet, and loose earrings from seed beads and glass beads. The workshop is led by Beijing-based African-themed jewelry designer, Tina, founder of Chariots Handmaydz and the People at Heart Foundation. For more details and to reserve your tickets, click here. Sep 6: Beijing Postcards Historical Run: The Forbidden Cities of Old Beijing
This historical run led by Beijing Postcards will connect three of Beijing's formerly "forbidden spots": the Forbidden City, the Legation Quarter, and Bada Hutong, once home to brothels and opium dens. The course will be around 10km and will take about two hours – with a few stops along the way – to learn about the historical background of the places en route. To participate, you need to be able to run at a pace of 9km/hour. All profits from the run will be donated to an NGO helping children with cerebral palsy in western China.
