Win Tickets: Nugget Records to Host Cassette Store Day Weekend Celebration, Oct 16-18

Local heroes of all things analog and lo-fi, Nugget Records – in conjunction with fellow Beijing-based experimental tape label Daftpop – will be hosting Cassette Store Day celebrations this weekend, Oct 16-18, at their eponymous flagship café off Beiluogu Xiang. Now in its eighth year, Cassette Store Day is an international affair, an opportunity for independent labels all over the world (and the big ones that quickly co-opted this otherwise definitively DIY effort) to showcase niche sounds, micro-genres, zines, and everything else that keeps the underground indie scene richly diverse and shimmering with surprises. To mark the occasion, there will be a slate of performances on Friday and Saturday, plus two unique markets on Saturday and Sunday.

Kicking off the series on Friday night is solo post-punker turned electronic producer, sourtower, whose penchant for witchy mantras and rolling rhythms transforms any stage she happens upon into a theater of the sublime. Ever the masters of curating a well-balanced lineup fit for any musical diet, though, Nugget enlisted fresh on the scene indie-pop darlings Cherry Puff to cut through sourtower’s brooding atmospherics, culminating in a Friday night that is sure to be equal parts dark and light, while remaining altogether sonically delectable. Then, on Saturday, electro-psych rockers guiguisuisui will bring their signature mix of multi-instrumentalism and performance art to the stage, finding a fitting foil in the soothing after-hours indie electro-rock sounds of Nocturnes, closing out the music portion of the festivities.

Obviously, it wouldn’t be a Cassette Store Day weekend without the chance to pick up a few tunes on the format of honor. As such, there will be a Music Market on Saturday featuring some of China's best indie labels including Maybe Mars, Field Ring Records, Eating Music, and others who will be selling tapes, vinyl, CDS, and more alongside CSD exclusives from both Nugget and Daftpop. On Sunday, music makes way for literature during the Zine Market, giving space to independent publishers, comic authors, and more, plus the release of Nugget’s highly anticipated annual coloring zine.

Lastly, the folks at Nugget were kind enough to offer our readers some free tickets. For the chance to snag a pair to either the Friday or Saturday night shows, send an email to editor@thebeijinger.com with the subject line "Free Tix to CSD" by noon on Thursday, Oct 15. Please include your name, phone number, and which night you’d like to attend in the body of the email. Winners will be chosen at random.

Both shows start at 9pm and cost RMB 60 for pre-sale or RMB 70 at the door. Both markets are free to attend and run from 1-7pm. For more information, and to purchase tickets for the gigs, scan the QR code in the poster above.
