Eating and Drinking Around the Sanlitun Embassy Area, Pt.2

Just north of the bustling Sanlitun Taikooli area lies what is often referred to as the “embassy area” due to the numerous embassies situated there. Among the embassies and tree-lined streets are a number of restaurants and eateries, many of which have a long history in the capital. The majority of these are located along two streets: Sanlitun Xiwujie, running east to west, and Sanlitun Beixiaojie, running north to south.

Today in our part two of restaurants in the Sanlitun embassy area we’ll be taking a look at the restaurants along Sanlitun Beixiaojie. This follows on our article from earlier this week exploring those on Sanlitun Xiwujie.

Peach by HULU

This Sanlitun branch of Peach by HULU opened up above Jenny Lou’s in 2021. Serving up their usual offerings of pasta, sandwiches, salads, burgers and more with a focus on vegan and veggie options it’s a great  place to grab a healthy, and very reasonably priced, bite to eat. Definitely a more casual dining spot, their inside seating area is simplistic but chic and come summer they have plenty of outside seating so you can enjoy the leafy surroundings.

One of my personal favorites on the menu has to be their Fala-La-La-La (RMB 52), a delicious falafel salad which may, controversially, be my favorite falafel in Beijing. Another must try is their The Fish to Your Chips (RMB 58) which can also be snagged every Friday for the low cost of just RMB 28. It’s also a great little brunch spot with offerings such as The Brit-kkie (RMB 58), their take on an English Breakfast, or Breakfast Royale (RMB 48) if you’re looking for a more continental option.

In and Out (一坐一忘)

No, not to be confused with the American burger chain In-N-Out, In and Out is a China-born Yunnan restaurant chain. More upmarket than your usual Yunnnan restaurant, this Lijiang-themed eatery is staffed by various ethnic minorities decked out in their traditional costumes. They serve up a number of Dai favorites and two must order dishes are the Roast Fish with Lemongrass (Sand Goby RMB 298, Weever RMB 148) and the Braised Chicken in Copper Pot (RMB 108). For side dishes a few to try are the Stir-fried Wild Porcini Mushrooms with Chillies (RMB 138), Beef Rolls with Mint  (RMB 68) and, of course, Roasted Yunnan Cheese (RMB 58).

Assaggi

An Italian restaurant with a focus on fresh seafood, Assaggi has been open for around 20 years. Up on the second floor the décor is very much traditional restaurant – think white tablecloths – with plenty of natural light and they also boast a lovely rooftop surrounded with greenery that is hard to beat in summer. They have a seasonal menu and some dishes currently available to try are the Lobster Pizza (RMB 208) baked in their very own brick pizza oven and Calamarata ai Fruitti di Mare (RMB 158). A staple to try on the menu has to be their Imported Fresh Oysters (RMB 38/for one) which are some of the best in the capital.

Da Giuliano

A delightful Italian Pasticceria run by the same people as Assaggi, this is a hot spot for embassy workers and locals alike who are looking for an indulgent treat to enjoy with a coffee. They have an extensive range of pastries with classics such as Croissants (RMB 18), Pain au Chocolat (RMB 22) or more unusual offerings like Yellow Peach Croissant (RMB 22). However, the true star of the show has to be their miniature desserts that as well as looking beautiful, taste just as good. Most of these are priced at RMB 9 and they have a whole selection of tarts from fruit to egg or chocolate ganache along with other delicacies like mini profiteroles.

Panino Teca

Also operated by the same people behind Assaggi (yes you might be spotting a theme here) Panino Teca specializes in all things sandwiches, especially paninis. Using freshly baked bread a few to try are the Norvegese (RMB 65) that has smoked salmon, artichokes mascarpone and zucchini and the Crudo (RMB 58) that combines Parma ham, mozzarella and tomatoes. Along with sandwiches they also have an excellent all day breakfast and brunch menu with offering like Full English Breakfast (RMB 75) Panino Teaca’s Egg Florentine (RMB 42) Seaside Scrambled (RMB 50).

Schindlers Tankstelle

This German restaurant with its bright yellow walls and brown wooden beams looks like it’s been taken right out of Bavaria. The Sanlitun sister of the Ritan Park location inside and out gives off strong German beer hall vibes with plenty of heavy wooden furniture and various German flags. They have plenty of German classics on the menu like Berlin Style Pork Knuckle (RMB 198), Mixed Sauage Platter (RMB 308) or if you just want a bit of everything their massive Meat Platter “Excalibur” (RMB 398).
