Do These Veggies Vibe? Putting Slowboat's Veggie Burgers to the Test

Slowboat has long been a staple in Beijing's burger scene, renowned for its juicy patties and high-quality ingredients. But can this popular establishment also deliver for the city's vegetarian and vegan diners? We visited the restaurant's Sanlitun location to find out.

The Dongsi Doufu Burger

The Dongsi Doufu Burger (RMB 50) at Slow Boat is a standout vegetarian option that has been a menu favorite for good reason. The patty, made from tofu, is incredibly flavorful and satisfying, with a unique texture that is both crispy on the outside and juicy in the middle. The tofu, although soft, works well on the bun, and does not fall apart despite its tender center. The crunchy coleslaw complements the tofu entirely, creating a harmonious blend of flavors and textures. Paired with the Spicy-sriracha honey aioli, this burger is a must-try for vegetarians and meat-eaters alike.

The Lotus Lane Bean Burger

The Lotus Lane Bean Burger (RMB 50) is a personal favorite of mine. The patty itself is firm and stays together, unlike many bean burgers on the market that fall apart within the first couple of bites. But the toppings of crunchy fried onions and house made pickles are what really elevate the burger, adding both sweet and tangy elements. The drizzle of special sauce and the soft black sesame bun brings the burger together. It is a good option for both vegetarians and vegans looking for alternatives to meat, specifically those searching for that smokiness often missing from plant-based options.

While these two burgers are the only menu items catered particularly to vegetarians, this establishment's menu is a delightfully diverse affair. Diners can indulge in an array of other appetizing vegetarian options like crispy Sweet Potato Fries (RMB 45) and Seasoned Fries (small RMB 36, large RMB 46), Pickle Board (RMB 29), fresh salads (RMB 40-50), and a tempting selection of house-brewed beers (RMB 30-70). These dishes are also great for sharing, making Slowboat perfect for families and larger groups of people.

Slowboat deserves praise for its efforts to cater to vegetarians and vegans. With standout options like the bean burger, the restaurant provides delicious plant-based fare that can satisfy even the most discerning of palates. Whether you follow a vegetarian or vegan lifestyle or simply enjoy exploring diverse culinary offerings, Slowboat is a great option that accommodates all preferences. Its inclusive menu and dedication to quality make it a dining destination worth exploring for anyone seeking a memorable meal in Beijing.
