This fortress served as a gate to the wilds beyond the Wall during the Ming dynasty. Less crowded, but more recently restored. 1 hour's drive from Beijing.
Car: take Badaling Expressway, get off at Juyongguan Exit.
Bus: take tourism bus 1 from Qianmen or tourism bus 2 from Beijing Railway Station.
