Founded in 1923 at Peking University, Light Society was the earliest photography collective in Chinese history and began as an Art Photography Research Association born out of its members’ love for photography. However, the collective was shut down in 1937 due to Japan's invasion of China, only to be reopened as an art space 80 years later with a mission dictated by the original members' to create a multifunctional institution for modern photography that combines research, education, exhibition, and collection.
