It's less of a circus than Badaling or Mutianyu, and the four-hour hike from Simatai to Jinshanling is one of the most spectacular ways to experience the wall, but it is very steep in parts. The less physically fit can ride the Simatai cable car. Visitors can also take a zipline (i.e. cable-suspended pulley) from the halfway point to the parking lot.
Car: From Sanyuan Qiao on Third Ring Road, take Jingcheng Lu past Miyun. At Tanghe Daqiao (Tanghe Bridge) before the bridge, turn right, then follow signs to Simatai Great Wall for the next 10km to get there. About 2.5 hours.
Bus: On weekends take the 8.30am luxury tour bus from Qianmen. Round trip tickets are RMB 95. Bus leaves Simatai around 3-4pm.
Or, from Dongzhimen, take 980 to Miyun station (RMB 15, 1 1/2 hours) then switch to a Simatai bound bus (RMB 15, 1 hour). (NOTE: SIMATAI IS CURRENTLY CLOSED TO THE PUBLIC AS OF JULY 2010)
