Xu Beihong is considered the father of modern Chinese painting, and you can find poor imitations of his work for outrageous prices in souvenir shops across town, but we'd rather go here and see over 100 of his actual works. Xu lived from 1895-1953 and studied Western painting techniques in France. He was one of the first painters to merge Western and Chinese techniques, but he remains most famous for his pictures of forceful galloping stallions painted in traditional Chinese style. Xu founded the Central Academy of Fine Arts in 1950, and was chairman of the Chinese Artists Association from 1949 until his death.
