5 Things to Taste, Smell, Touch, Hear, and See, Nov 9-11

Beijing can be overstimulating place to live, to say the least. Let’s be real: sometimes even our sixth sense (the one that tells you when that stick of chuan'r will make you sick for the next two days) gets a decent workout. With such a wide variety of events, restaurants, and gigs to attend, we suggest bathing each of your five senses in one, if not all, of the nourishing goings-on below.

Taste

Nov 10: Diwali Celebration at Punjabi
The Indian festival of Diwali may be renowned for its lights but no holiday is ever not about food. As such, Punjabi is throwing an all-sense-tickling Diwali party with an over 20-dish buffet, free-flow drinks, and DJs mixing dancy Bollywood rhythms. Get stuffed, get tipsy, and embrace the chance to show off the moves you've learned from Bollywood. RMB 200, RMB 150 (advance). 7pm. Punjabi Indian Restaurant

Smell

Nov 10: Uncorked. Wine Tasting at The Opposite House
Nothing smells more like winter than a glass of deep red wine and a story, which we assume is why The Opposite House is offering both this Saturday. They'll take you on a journey through seven wines that map their history, which you may not remember after you've had your nose deep in glasses filled with Chinese, Turkish, Greek, and Israeli, among other varieties that you wouldn't otherwise find in your nearest Cheers store. RMB 258. 3pm. Opposite House

Touch

Nov 11: Blues and Balboa Nights at the Bricks
Grab your partner or, if you are cheeky enough, two, and roll onto the dancefloor this Sunday for The Bricks' ongoing beginner lessons for Balboa and blues dancing. Sure, it may look difficult but you might as well give it a try because your winter weight isn't going to work itself off. Every Sunday, 7.30pm (blues), 8.30pm (Balboa), 9.30pm (dance party). RMB 30, includes one drink. The Bricks

Hear

Nov 10-11: Oleg Kireyev at East Shore Jazz Café
This Russia-hailing saxophonist is dubbed the first person in his country to combine ethnic instruments and throat singing with jazz. Sounds like a curious experiment? You bet! Oleg Kireyev will perform on Saturday and Sunday with an internationally renowned crew including pianist Moreno Donadel from Italy, Daniel Callaghan on bass, and Dimitry Strelianny on drums. Stop by to catch what's sure to be one of the most worldly gigs you've ever seen. Free. 9.30pm. The Bricks and East Shore Jazz Café

See

Nov 10-11: Roberto Bolle dance performance
With our sedate, desk lifestyle, we here at the Beijinger may not be the greatest dancers but that doesn't mean that we can't be great appreciators. This weekend, we're particularly excited by Roberto Bolle's performance at the NCPA, where we'll witness first-hand why the performer and artistic director's mix of classical and modern choreography creates the basis for one-of-a-kind works. RMB 160-880. 7.30pm. NCPA
