Just 18 kilometers northwest of the Summer Palace, Jiufeng Forest Park doesn't pretend to be a wilderness experience. But this welcome retreat, with its rocky outcrops and forested hillsides, isn't a simple walk in the park, either. There are three or four hours of hiking to be done here, up and down the stone steps and well-trodden dirt trails. Some trails hug the greener, lower hills, pausing at small, simple pagodas and impromptu picnic spots. Others are more ambitious, including one long, hot march up to 1,153m - a climb of more than 700m from the main ticket gate. There's no chairlift here, so the 360-degree views remain the pre_serve of those who earn them the hard way.
Bus: Catch Bus 346 from Yiheyuan (the Summer Palace) bus station to Beianhe Xikou (北岸河西口), then walk west for about 15 minutes.
Car: Take the Badaling Expressway to the Bian-he Exit. At Beianhe, turn left at the T-junction and follow the signs to Jiufeng.
