DJ Shadow in Beijing: Shadows on High

Those already in the know about DJ Shadow don't need a reminder that he is a living legend in the world of instrumental hip hop/turntablism/electronica (yes, all three). Or that he was one of the seminal players in the founding of the California Bay Area hip-hop collective Quannum/Solesides Crew. Or that his musical wizardry – which will be only display this Friday night at Angel Club – landed him in the Guinness Book of World Records (2001). Or that he is amongst a very select few who’ve had their music brought to color by Wong Kar Wai - see “Six Daysmusic video below.

I won’t even bother getting into all that, since those who know Shadow already know they won’t want to miss this show. And those who’ve slept for the past decade and a half and still need a Shadow primer can listen here.

Instead of going on and on about the great wisdom and wonderment of DJ Shadow, just let the fact that he is finally coming after a number of failed attempts sink into your membrane. Then, come Friday night, take your membrane and your wallet, put on your finest sneakers, and head over to Angel Club for what will be an evening of top-notch mashin’ of some of the best hip-hop (or funk, or soul, or jazz or doo wap, depending on his mood) – that you’ve ever heard in your life. And if not in life, I guarantee at least in this past year.

Warning: Small venue + amazing DJ = a limited amount of tickets sure to quickly sell out. tbj highly suggest you get yours in advance!

well - cheap tickets are good - but unfixed prices aren't. Beijing clubs have a bad reputation for inflating the cover charge as the night goes on - so i take "flexible pricing" as an indication that the price is more likely to be about RMB 300 at midnight - but who knows ...

Ok, gotcha. Didn't know about the bad reputation of Chinese clubs.
But I am not sure if I am really going anyways. Although I would love to see Shadow ... hm.

You could have called Clubzone or the venue (6552 8888) for advanced tickets - but when i just tried they informed me that all the advance tickets are sold out and now you can only get them at the door. The woman who answered the phone said that doors open at about 8.30pm and (in contradiction of what we heard from organizers yesterday) that tickets would sell for either RMB 100 or 120. This doesn't look like a good sign ...

Why isn't it a good sign. What's wrong with cheaper tickets?
