FAKE Music Media to Become Record Label, Joins Forces with !K7 and Pilot Music
Yesterday afternoon, it was announced that FAKE Music Media, the group behind many concerts and parties in Beijing and responsible for bringing Nova Heart to Europe and America, would next turn their sights on releasing music as well as promoting it. They are joining forces with international heavy hitters !K7 and Beijing-based label Pilot Music with hopes of nurturing local talent and packaging it for the appreciation of audiences around the world.
FAKE, founded by Helen Feng (Nova Heart) and Philipp Grefer, began in 2010 as an “artist services” company specializing in organizing tours for foreign artists coming to China. It is with this new endeavor that they want to encourage the development of musicians in their roster to release and record music to an international standard. So far they have Nova Heart, Whai, and most recently, the far out electronic music wizard Dead J, on their roster. Read more about Dead J and a couple other music heads making it in the capital in this piece recently released by Fader.
!K7 is a Berlin Based electronic music label with international distribution and a catalogue of diverse releases 30-years-deep from artists like Nick Cave, Kode 9, and Carl Craig. This partnership is quite possibly a match made in rock n roll heaven and could do a lot to help spread the gossip of "made in China" underground music around the world.
Often is the case in China, labels try to dominate the artists, restricting bands to play only sanctioned performances, while having full control of all the output created or recorded by the artist. This has led many bands in China to remain unsigned, all together avoiding this apparent neglect or appreciation for artistry. FAKE hopes to use their insights into the music industry to advance their roster of artists to the international stage while nourishing these performers to their full potential. Sounds good to us.
