Jamaican Reggae and Dancehall Vet Biggaton to Grace Hot Cat Club's Stage on Oct 7

Though Hot Cat Club has recently seen a resurgence as an intimate indie rock and standup venue as of late, the typically cozy Fangjia bar will soon transform into a vibrant, groove-inducing dance hall. That’s because Jamaican reggae and dancehall vet Biggaton will grace the Hot Cat’s stage on October 7.

Born Kevin Roye in the small Jamaican town of Mandeville, the would be musician started off on a much more academic path, earning a scholarship to the somewhat prestigious Holmwood Technical High school. But it didn’t take long for him to be bitten by the reggae bug and focus entirely on writing and performing, starting with small gigs in the local Mandeville scene before catching his big break when dancehall star Capleton recruited him as an opening act for a Jamaica wide tour.

A profile on Reverb Nation says Biggaton’s “timeless message is one of love, hope, upliftment and enlightenment, speaking to religious confusion, political corruption, poverty and crime.” Those socially conscious lyrical themes translate well musically on songs like “Crime Stopper,” (click here to watch the song's music video), on which the musician traverses inner city Jamaican streets, and outlines his hopes for a more peaceful community, over sunny reggae instrumentation.
