Yuebin takes you back to the 80s - in a good way. Apparently when this place opened as the first private restaurant after the reform period kicked in, there were queues of hungry diners around the block. These days Beijing has a little more choice when it comes to eating out, but Yuebin still attracts a healthy crowd every night. Tucked up an obscure hutong more or less opposite the National Art Museum, eating here really feels like stepping into an earlier era, when local eateries were certainly less flash, but also more homely.

The food is nothing fancy, but it is very tasty, solid local fare at very cheap prices. The service is always cheerful - it really does feel like sitting down in someone's enlarged dining room.

Be warned, however, that local clientele also means local habits - on some nights the cigarette smoke is so thick it hangs like a cloud over the diners.

If you can get past the smoke, Yuebin is a fun, tasty slice of living Beijing history.
