I had dinner with my girlfriend and 5 out-of-towners at Turkish Mum last night. The food was great and the waiters were very attentive. What really impressed me was what happened after we finished the meal. It was pouring rain outside and we only had 1 small umbrella for the 7 of us, so as we were walking outside to try to catch a taxi, one of the waiters came over to us with a big umbrella, walked outside with us, and stood outside holding the umbrella over my friends while we tried to catch a taxi. After about 10 minutes of standing there without luck, the manager of the restaurant called us back into the restaurant and told us that one of her friends had a car parked out front and would be happy to drive my friends back to their hotel in Guomao. We offered to give her money for it, but she would not accept it. So my 5 friends piled into the car and went on their way back to the hotel. I thought that this restaurant truly went above and beyond the usual crappy level of service in Beijing restaurants and restored my faith in the ability of people to do good things.
