I tried these BECAUSE I saw an asian reviewer complaining it was too sweet and creamy. That made me think they might actually be good...
UPDATE: I wrote the above review a year ago, to express why I tried them. I had not yet eaten them at that point. It just occured to me that I should actually review them now that I've tried them many times.
Quality:
The cupcakes and the icing are perfectly done. The cakes themselves are consistently moist (even the Red Velvet, in my experience: not sure what happened with reviewer below who found them dry), and the icing is creamy and delicious. Yes, they are very sweet as cupcakes ought to be. If you're looking for a dessert that is not so sweet there are plenty of other options: lemon meringue pie or carrot cake for instance. If that's what you prefer, great. But don't complain about the sweetness of something that is supposed to be very sweet. That's like complaining that your hamburger is "too meaty" or your pizza is "too cheesy."
The decoration is expertly done, and the special flavors introduced every month are usually worth branching out to try. Overall I'd give them 4-5 stars for taste, consistency of flavor and innovation of new flavor combos.
Service:
I've ordered these cupcakes (or they've been ordered for me) about six or seven times in the last year. Delivery has always been exactly when promised. Responses to orders have always been timely and friendly. Last week I had my first issue with service: I ordered some minis and I got an email back saying they were no longer delivering minis as far as my place. I'd had minis delivered before, so I wrote back asking why the change (turns out they just don't travel well at that size) and asking about a couple other options. I didn't hear back from them for a week, and was just beginning to wonder what had happened with their service and was considering remarking on that in a review when Lexie called me personally this morning. Over the busy short holiday this week my email had been buried. She explained everything, made it all right and more than right, and my cupcakes are being delivered today. That's what good businesses do to keep customers, and I was very impressed with their customer service and desire to fix the situation. I definitely give them 5 stars for service.
Price:
Ok, yes, they're a bit costly. But that's not the whole story. As a way of proving I know what I'm talking about, let me preface by saying I know baking. The only baked goods I buy in Beijing are cheescake (because I lack a hot enough oven), pizza (ditto) and Lollipop Bakery cupcakes. And there's only a few places that do cheesecake and pizza I can stand. I make all my own breads–from peasant loaves to sandwich bread to na'an to challah to soft pretezels and bagels–from every kind of flour: bread, whole wheat, graham, rye, oat, cornmeal, kamut, spelt, etc. No one who knows me well buys their bread anymore. The inferior taste is hard to get over once you're used to the good stuff. Same with cakes of all sorts, as well as pies and cookies. Now that is not to brag; that is to make it clear that I know what is available to cook with in Beijing and how things taste. Lollipop Bakery's cupcakes are made with the good stuff. That shines through in the flavor every time. And that good stuff is NOT cheap. To charge less they'd have to be using inferior grade ingredients, and that would tell in their taste. I've been asked repeatedly by friends to consider selling my breads. I've considered it a couple times, and always rejected it because of price. I wouldn't make bread without unbleached, imported (or similar quality) flour and other high quality ingredients. I'm just not convinced enough people would be willing to pay the price I'd have to charge to make any profit. So I understand Lexie's prices (and that she's having to pay people to work for her and deliver for her) and think they are on the mid-high end of reasonable. But in no way unreasonable. Considering how willing Lollipop is to do nearly any request for decoration, that they ask for only 24 hours notice, and when you compare their product to others available in town they are definitely 5 stars value for money.

Great cupcakes delivered with a smile. I'll definitely be buying them again. Plus, who needs to eat two cupcakes? One is quite filling. Please don't make them less creamy or sweet. They're perfect the way they are.
