Passion.
It’s an important word.
Passion.
Home Plate BBQ’s Owners Seth and Adam have passion.
You can just feel it…their hearts are into this place.
Not every new trendy restaurant in town can make this claim.
Am I biased? Yes.
I am American and I love BBQ and foods influenced by the US south.
That being said, HOME PLATE BBQ is the real deal…and perhaps the only real deal BBQ joint in Beijing.
The baby back ribs at union grille, TGIFs and other places is not BBQ – those ribs are cooked in an oven.
BBQ means slow cooking meat over wood or charcoal…using the smoke to cook.
It’s an entirely different flavor profile.
In Beijing, there are now two REAL BBQ joints: HOME PLATE BBQ and TIM’S TEXAS BBQ.
With all due respect to Tim, the soul of Tim’s left a long time ago…the location is in a heavily touristy street, the service is iffy and the meat is too charred and lacks flavor.
HOME PLATE delivers in ways the others have not.
OK…the food:
I just tried their fried pickles: real Vlasic pickles, fried. It’s salty – but delicious
Quesadilla: a gem, delicious
Buffalo Wings: they worked out the kinks in the sauce; it’s now a bit sweeter and delicious
Corn Dog: best deal in town…RMB 12…are you kidding me? Please don’t raise the price!
Brisket over French fries: amazing; it will render you speechless as you gobble it down
Those French fries: damn good!
Pulled Pork: a silver medalist to their brisket
Beef Brisket Sandwich (chopped or otherwise): it’s THE REASON to visit Home Plate; what? only RMB 35...are you kidding me? It's soooooooooooooo good! Onions and pickles, fresh bread...moist brisket...mmmm...my Chinese girlfriend also loves it!
Ribs: better and better; not dry anymore; price is RMB 150 and worth it! You will NOT be able to finish...big portions
Cole Slaw: can be improved; it’s stuck in cole slaw purgatory between vinegary and creamy; I would amp up the creaminess factor
Beer: amazing microbrew beer selection
They also have Rye Whiskey.
For dessert, I have had the cherry pie twice: real, big cherries…as American as Warrant’s “Cherry Pie”
Location: a bit tough to find the first time, but well worth it…
