Being an Italian, you taste the plastic ingredients they use on the Lasagnes and pizzas. Cheese on Pizza Tonno tasted like the silicon based chemicals they use in Pizza Hut. Tuna very briny and laden with MSG.
Frutti de Mare (Y59) was similar to the one's you buy from microwaved value section in Carrefour, Paris. Seafood all rubbery and heated to death. Having said that Rugola salad (Y30) was pretty good, with real Parmasan and real olive oil, Rugola probably locally sourced so probably laced with DDT - although a salad is not difficult to make. Anyway I could go on, and on.... but if Annie's was in Italy or France I'm pretty sure not many people would go there. The fact is , Annie's is based in Beijing thousands of miles away from Europe and claims to be authentic Italian, so this means that thousands of Chinese will believe these claims. Annie's is not a con but rather just a money making exercise.
2 stars are given for value and staff service. If you are absolutely starving and on a budget , go for Annie's and don't think about where the food comes from.

Re: Cheap and
So what is actually your problem? Annies is not haute cusine, and never tried or claimed to be that like so many other "western" restaurants in the city. Dont mix up review and rant. Happy new year.

Re: Cheap and
I've never found Annies to be anything less than 100% reliable and good value. Fine dining it is not, but if that's what you want then go to Tavola and pay four times the price.

Re: Cheap and
While the vegetables are no different to ones's you buy in the street...that's exactly the whole problem! They serve tomatoes you buy in Tuscany which are considered the lowest grade, with a weird after taste. Nonetheless, As you say, 'Annies has its own farm for veggies'...if something is too cheap....there herein lies the suspicion.

Re: Cheap and
There are already levels of DDT in soils around watersheds of Beijing reservoirs. DDT levels have been been proven to be albeit relatively low.... however the point is they HAVE DDT!
