I was a big fan of this venue when it was the first Kro's Nest location in Chaoyang District, and was also a fan of the man "Kro" Bauer. So when he became yet another sad case study for a successful foreigner pushed out of his business by a local partner, I vowed never to cross its threshold again.
However, with a friend visiting from out of town who liked the venue in its previous incarnation, convenience overpowered conviction, and I sat down for another pizza, which Tube Station claims is Beijing's largest. We actually ordered the medium, which was still plenty for three of us.
Tube Station's Gongti crowd was, on a Wednesday night, almost entirely young and local, and some of them may very well have been stopping in for something to eat before hopping to neighboring Vic's or other nearby clubs. They certainly have a club-conducive happy hour: 17:00-22:00, Monday through Friday, half-price on selected cocktails, which for the most part will mean RMB 15 per drink. Soft drinks are RMB 15 with free refills.
The pizza was essentially as I remembered it: big, American-style, very tasty, very filling. Fans of European-style, thin-crust pizza will not likely love this kind. It's great for an office party, a birthday party, or other informal and generally low-cost night out, which seemed to be what a lot of the patrons surrounding us were doing.
The only thing that seemed to change was the wait. With the venue full (at least the back garden was full, with more waiting in line), it took at least 30 minutes for the pizza to arrive. Get there early (before 6:30), or call ahead to reserve a table.
I would go back. Now that Kro isn't part of any of the businesses that bear or previously bore his nickname, it doesn't actually make a difference. Kro's Sanlitun location is too claustrophobic and getting a table is impossible. As such this may be a viable alternative, and is certainly easier to find than other nearby venues for visitors unfamiliar with Beijing or the Sanlitun area.

Re: Wanted to dislike it, but couldn't
Why isn't Kro part of Kro's Nest anymore? When did that happen?

Ok, you ready? The answer to ur question is confusing as freck...
Kro partnered with the owner of Tube Station, a much smaller restaurant, years ago. Together they opened Kro's Nest and it became immensely popular. Then the chinese partner decided to push Kro out the business. Kro later opened two new restaurants of his own, also named Kro's Nest, whereas the Kro's Nest in Gongti changed its name back to Tube Station.

But... "Now that Kro isn't part of any of the businesses that bear or previously bore his nickname, it doesn't actually make a difference..."
Does that mean he's no longer part of the two current Kro's Nests either? The ones he started up independently after being pushed out by Tube Station dude?

Re: Wanted to dislike it, but couldn't
I followed that story when it originally happened, but I'm wondering what has happened to Kro now? Has he been pushed out yet again?

Yeah ok, I didn't catch this. Hopefully someone can give us the scoop, OP?
Or has anyone actually seen Kro at one his restaurants lately?

Re: Wanted to dislike it, but couldn't
I have really grown to like the Solana branch after it opened but it was a complete shambles this weekend and really seems to have let it's standards drop.
We arrived mid afternoon to find the place a complete mess. There were five tables covered in dirty dishes and no waiting staff to be seen anywhere. The 13 yr old floor manager was completely spinning and had no idea how to control the situation.
This was around 4pm and there were around 7 covers eating in the restaraunt, two waiting for their food and about half a dozen still waiting to make an order.
All in all it took an hour from arriving to receiving a drink, but the camoradarie amongst the other starving and thirsty diners was great, and after bursting out a few rounds of 'roll out the barrel' and 'we'll be hanging out the washing' we manged to get through it all.
The food had gone down hill considerably, defintely nowhere near the standard of when it opened. Willing to give it one more try but if its as shite as it was the other day ill be heading back to Lets Burger.
