Review of Katchup
5

I once went on a city-wide quest to find the best bugrger in town. Great Leap held the top spot for a while, but I soon came to believe that the only way I'd be able to get a burger with the quality and freshness I wanted, I'd have to open my own burger restaurant. I seriously considered doing this.

Then I went to Katsup. I was put off by the name for a while, thinking the place might be a poorly run Chinese take on western burgers. But that's not the case. All of the ingredients (meat, toppings, sauces and those incredible buns) are top notch. (When making burgers at home for friends, I buy buns from Katsup at 15 kuai a pop—and they're totally worth it.) My regular burger at Katsup is The Atomic, a take on the classic burger, but with jalapeños and hot sauce, only I substitute the sautéed onions for fresh onions. Best burger I've personally had in this hemisphere.

The fries are terrible—big and dry and flavorless without salt or sauce.

It's for the burgers alone that I'm awarding five stars.

I'm modifying my post. They have changed the way they make their fries. The fries are now excellent. I have now tried other things on the menu, like the tofu burger, and the tofu salad—excellent menu items. I also tried the Reuben sandwich—excellent. They make their own pastrami. It takes them three weeks to make it. I dare say it is the most excellent form of delicious beef I have ever tasted.

Every burger is a work of elegant, consistent art. This place should win The Beijinger's burger cup ever year, if only more people knew about it.
