Art Attack: New Openings and Last Calls

Looking for some visual stimulation this weekend? Luckily, Beijing’s currently being hit with a barrage of new exhibits, ranging from photography to paintings to installations. Check out the list below for shows to treat your peepers to.

Just opened:

Jan 8: Yu Bogong’s "At This Present Moment" examines Indian Esoteric Buddhism and the Chinese Five Element theory, and is on show at White Space Beijing.

Jan 8: Also at White Space Beijing, painter Wang Min shows off her inner world in “On the Way,” through portraits of everyday objects that act like a visual diary.

Jan 9: Platform China moved into the third and final segment of their three-part exhibit. In a self-conscious study of artistic collaboration, "The Third Party - A Group Celebration!" invites a host of artists, collectives, and projects to take part in a joint exhibit that includes live performance, site-specific installations, and more.

Coming this weekend:

Jan 15: Ling Jian’s "Moon in Glass" mosies on over from its old home at the Today Art Museum to its new spot at the UCCA. Get caught between the painter's portraits of perfect yet eerie women and the moon-like tinted mirrors that reflect them.

Jan 15: The UCCA's "Curated By..." series turns to photography, with this double feature curated by Three Shadows founder Rong Rong. "Inner Ear" features the work of two different photographers with very different styles, but together they let us listen in on some of contemporary China's varied voices.

Jan 15: Ever get even just a little uncomfortable at the ubiquity of the internet and other technology? (I realize you're reading this on the interwebs, so ... not to freak you out.) Eight artists take a critical look at our relationship to technology in "You Are Not a Gadget," on show at Pekin Fine Arts.

Jan 16: Find out what happens when cultures cross, as Czech painter Jiri Straka shows us his take on traditional Chinese painting. "The Mundane World" has a pretty short run at the Today Art Museum (the exhibit ends Jan 22), so get there while you can.

Stay tuned for lots more at the end of the month, too.

And finally, last calls:

If you’ve thought these exhibits might be interesting, but haven’t gotten around to checking them out, take note – they’re on their way out!

Ends Jan 16: Fei Jun's "Stranger" sees its final weekend at offiCina Beijing. Last chance to let this multimedia installation make you feel all sorts of strangeness about contemporary social interaction.

Ends Jan 16: "Liu Ding’s Store" is closing up shop at Galerie Urs Meile. Take a walk in that grey area between art and commerce.

If your new year resolution had anything to do with making a better go of Beijing's art scene, now's a good time to start on that.
