Taste Jamaica: Beijing Goes Jerk Chicken

The other day, I went to Rose's house and she cooked me some food from the Caribbean.

Jamaica?

No, she offered to do it. Ha, ha. Crap joke out the way, for about the last year, Ghanaian home cook Rose has been developing a unique food delivery and catering service in Beijing. Private Kitchen specialises in authentic Afro-Caribbean snacks and dishes.

I tried the "classic jerk chicken" (RMB 40) - it's really, really good. Oh my. Rich, spicy and smoky, it struck me just how I miss this sort of chicken dish in China. Rose imports a whole range of exotic spices from Ghana and via the UK to mix her jerk seasoning, which she blends herself and lets rest and mature for months before using it.

The business currently runs out of Rose's own kitchen in Chaoyang where she cooks for home delivery and larger catering orders. She's already expanding to Wudaokou with a new kitchen, and Shunyi, where she's putting the finishing touches to a bakery to bake her range of Jamaican rum cake and cheesecakes and "Rose's Bread", a slightly sweet Jamaican white bread that's great for mopping up tangy jerk sauce.

I got to taste some of her patties too. Jamaica? OK, sorry. From left to right, spicy beef patty, chicken fusion patty (with Rose's special blend of African spices) and a mini Cornish pasty, all RMB 20. Great value and delicious too. Currently, Private Kitchen's delivery zone stretches from Dongsi in the west to the 5th ring in the east, plus Wudaokou and Shunyi. This excludes me, annoyingly. And anyone else in Gulou. Better news, she's looking to open a West-Indian style chicken restaurant soon, which would be something of a first for the city.

if you have never taste Afro-Caribean food before, Ms Rose private kitchen is the best place to go, wow i beat, you will bite your tongue.
