Go to Cocolol for Delectable Southeast Asian Dishes

With the exception of a few five-star hotels who employ Southeast Asian chefs, Malaysian, Singaporean and Indonesian food aren’t well represented in Beijing. This small restaurant behind the largely ignored Silk Market 2 isn’t the definitive solution, but offers a tantalizing reminder of what Southeast Asia has to offer.

The snack platter (RMB 28) is a sampler of appetizers which can all be ordered individually – I’d go back for the Indonesian perkedel (potato puffs) and beef and potato samosas. The rendang beef (RMB 48) is bold and spicy, with plenty of sauce, though the meat is a little fatty.

There are other classics like Hainan chicken rice, laksa and sambal seafood dishes. Fill up on the Indonesian fried noodles (RMB 32) – nutty, spicy and flavored with shrimp. Enjoy the outdoor seating as summer approaches.

Standout dishes: Rendang beef
Also try: Cafe Sambal, Lau Pa Sak

I have been to Indonesia and my favorite dish is mie goreng fried noodles. Cocolol makes best Indonesian noodles in Beijing!!! They have 2 types: 河粉 and 炒面. I tried 炒面 and it tasted quite authentic. Beef rendang, Curry Ayam and other famous dishes are also good.

Dongzhimen and Sanlitun Indonesian restaurants are serving food which is not Indonesian. Cocolol so far is the best Indonesian restaurant in town. I have Indonesian wife and I know what I am talking about!
