DJ Ekki: Bad Egg Made Good

DJ Ekki and her Bad Egg label bring dubstep, drum & bass and more with their monthly Scrambled parties. Cue egg-related line of questioning.

Who are the good eggs on the Beijing scene?
There are no good eggs – we’ve scrambled, poached and fried them all to create an army of militant eggs. I have a lot of love for Oshi and Tnem. Also Kiko Su, Mickey Zhang, Blackie, Huang Weiwei and Eddie Lv.

Why is it so difficult for electronic music clubs to thrive in Beijing?
I guess the answer lies somewhere between money, intent and politics. However, instead of focusing on why it’s not working, we should be figuring out how to make it work!

Is Earl Bar the scene’s savior?
Earl Bar has been around for ages – it had just been forgotten. The next few parties there will be crucial.

Cheer us up – what reasons for optimism are there right now?
Come on, it’s summer, we’ve just had a bunch of fun festivals, and we’re still here. If none of us DJs and promoters have given up yet, you shouldn’t either!
