The Beijinger’s 2011 Pizza Cup: Kro's, Ho's, The Tree & Hutong Pizza Reach Final Four!

A furious round of balloting over the past four days has resulted in the Final Four of The Beijinger’s Pizza Cup – a hearty crew of the new, the old and the reborn who go on to the next round. The most dominant victory of the Round of 8 was rung up by The Tree, which slapped its bar brethren The Den to the curb by winning 74% of the vote. The narrowest victory was achieved by Gung Ho! Pizza, who eked out a win over surprising challenger Sureno by a mere nine ballots. In a clash of pizza empires, the American-style Kro’s Nest whacked the Italian-style La Pizza, 59% to 41%. Meanwhile, Haidian’s last challenger, Eatalia, was knocked out by an ascendant Hutong Pizza, 54% to 46%

So we’re down to the final four – in which The Tree faces off against Kro’s Nest and Gung Ho! goes up against Hutong Pizza. You’ve got 4 days to decide, as this round closes Monday, November 28 at noon – after which we will announce the final match.

We also asked you who were your favorites to have been ousted in the Elite Eight round. Here's your top 3:

  1. Pyro Pizza
  2. Mao Mao Chong
  3. Annie’s

More salivatingly, we also asked you to come up with some toppings for a pizza named “the Beijinger.” Here are the most creative entries we received, which either made our mouths water or cracked us up:

  1. Neapolitan thin crust cooked quick, hoisin sauce base, garlic, Peking duck meat and fatty crispy skin, fresh green onions on top ... and no cheese!
  2. Despair, avarice, scallions. A thin crust, the very thinnest. Cheese, yes, but only for some.
  3. It would be a Beijing winter pizza, just like nangbaorou – baked naan base, lamb, potatoes, vegetables and that yummy tomato sauce.
  4. Whole wheat pizza crust (representing TBJ's healthy dose of content). A spicy red sauce for attitude. Extra cheese. Bacon and haggis.
  5. 葱花饼 (onion fried pancake) as the crust, that slightly sweet tomato mixture with egg as the sauce, no cheese, chopped funky Chinese "sausages" in place of pepperoni, some of that crispy jianbing wonton thing crushed over the top, and for some reason, shredded spicy cabbage over the top. Finally, an arseload of Tsingtao and Baijiu to wash it all down.
  6. Tomato, mozzarella, dog
  7. Thin crust, that sauce they put on chuan'r, no cheese, topped with pieces of lamb chuan'r, Beijing duck, spring onion, and green pepper.
  8. Sichuan pepper sauce, braised eggplant, bbq lamb
  9. Thin crust, cheese from the fromager de Pekin, sauce with a zhajiangmian flavor, scallions, and chives
  10. Jiucai, garlic, jingjiangrousi, cucumber and some lajiao

A Travesty!

I didn't look that hard, but I didn't see PBD Pizza Bar anywhere on here.

In my opinion its way better than Kro's, and contends with Hutong, just a different style.

PBD, is all around a better place, cheap beer, moderately priced pizza, but hearty. Great drink specials and a cool atmosphere. And no I'm not a Chinese person working there.

I just think I threw up in my mouth a little when i saw that Pyro pizza made it, and that Gung Ho! was overly celebrated, it's gourmet Domino's!! and always short on everything. Not enough sauce, cheese, or toppings on top of a crunchy sheet of cardboard.

I have one small observation: when voting in this last round, question #6 "requires an answer." I have never in 14 years tried any of the four or five pizza places listed on that question about "which one are you most sorry", and couldn't possibly care less which one was eliminated from the third round. I didn't vote for or against them the first time. So, I just picked one at random. This will mean your answers to those kinds of after-voting questions will be skewed.

thanks for the feedback. We'll add a "none of the above" option next round.

BTW a question we asked last round:

What do you consider a reasonable price for a pizza? Imagine a simple Margherita (cheese, sauce, pizza base) that would feed 2-3 people.

The average response was RMB 68

-- 27% said they think a reasonable price is under RMB 50

-- 42% said they think a reasonable price is between RMB 50 and RMB 80

-- 31% said they think a reasonable price is over RMB 80
