Crafty Ingenuity: Laji Couture Brings Sustainable Creativity to Sanlitun
This month sees the debut of Laji Couture, Beijing’s first street fair bringing together local businesses and individuals involved in design, fashion, food, games and healthy living, all in the name of raising awareness about sustainability. Among those confirmed: Shangrila Farms, Migas, Brand Nü, 360 Fashion. According to organizer Miranda Mullett, “Sustainability can be viewed as the steps we take to extend the life of our resources, by creating cycles around us.”
In that spirit, she has agreed to take us step-by-step through one of her DIY projects: recycling old wine corks into a usable consumer product (or in this case, a coaster).
1. To get started, collect a few old wine corks, a ruler, a pencil, a knife, and some super glue.
2. Measure and cut into 0.5cm slices.
3. Arrange the corks into the desired shape.
4. Super-glue all edges that meet. (You can also connect more cork slices to make a bulletin board or a placemat.)
