Don't Skimp on the Shrimp: Three Dim Sum Restaurants You Can't Miss
Who said you have to go south to try good dim sum? We've gathered our winners for Best Dim Sum from our 2013 Reader Restaurant Awards so you know where to go when you get a craving for shrimp dumplings and barbecued pork buns.
Best Dim Sum: Jin Ding Xuan
Jin Ding Xuan is a Cantonese chain that specializes in just about everything including dim sum. The 24-hour restaurant, located near Ditan Park, is a traditional building with red columns and sloped roofs. Although the place can be rowdy during nighttime hours as it's near a handful of popular bars and clubs, those looking for a more relaxed experience can come during the day.
Here's what our readers had to say:
“I would give this place five stars for the Tuanjiehu and Ditan Park branches. Both excellent – they have extensive menus, including not just Cantonese, but also Huaiyang, Sichuan and other dishes, all brilliantly done.”
“The hargao [shrimp dumplings] was probably the best I've tasted in Beijing. On a Sunday morning, the place can be really packed so get there early! Great place to take out-of-towners visiting for the weekend and needing a dim sum fix.”
Jin Ding Xuan was also chosen as Outstanding Late-Night Dining.
Outstanding Dim Sum: Lei Garden
Chairman Chan Shu Kit manages his Hong Kong-based, 18-branch Lei Garden restaurant empire with the military exactitude of his father, a Kuomintang general – and it shows. Service is crisp, the decor is smart, and the kitchen turns out flawless dim sum (11.30am-2.15pm) that many critics hail as Beijing’s best. This reputation is not unwarranted and explains the weekend lunch crowds. A fine gastronomic experience.
Expert Xixi Cheng voted Lei Garden for Best Dim Sum, while Emily Young chose them for Best Cantonese (Fine Dining).
Outstanding Dim Sum: Tang Palace
Those in the know name this chain as having some of the best dim sum in town. The a la carte options aren't half bad either – try the roast pigeon, manadarin fish and durian puffs. Reservations recommended.

Jing Ding Xuan's dim dum is good enough for the price, and the huge parking lot behind the building explains why the place is always packed with families.

I'm with you on Tang Palace.
The Haoyue/Jianguo Hotel location has the best dim sum I've had in Beijing.

Re: Don't Skimp on the Shrimp: Three Dim Sum Restaurants ...
Excuse me! Jing Ding Xuan - best dim sum restaurant??? You've got to be kidding and how laughable. It has the worst tasting dim sum in all of Beijing- truly , truly, truly! Who are these people who voted for it!?
Granted, before the Olympics it was OK. After the Olympics, their dimsum has declined so much that it is not worth going at all.
Lei Garden is really good, but quite expensive.
Tang Palace in Wangjing is really really really good. If one goes there before 11:00, some of the dishes are half price. Taste is truly like those you can to eat in Hong Kong.
Of these 3, go Tang Palace first. That's all I have to advise readers who want to eat Dim Sum.
