Hanggai Music Fest, Tavey Lean and the Solid Gold Dream Machine, The Album Leaf

Usually when you mix punk or other aggressive rock forms with a little local flavor your get something unpleasant like the Dropkick Murphys, or some sort of neo-garage rock yodelers. Not bashing on you if that’s your thing, but it’s safe to say that Hanggai is light years beyond this style trap.

Make sure to catch them at their annual Hanggai Music Festival at 2 Kolegas, as their legion of outer limits musical compatriots rock the stage for the entire weekend (May 30 - June 1). Some of the headliners include Spanish group La Pagatina, Djang San, Turtle Island (JP), and Randy Abel Stable. Check out our event listing for all the details.

Tavey Lean and the Solid Gold Dream Machine bring it on home to Home Plate this Saturday (May 31), with their thick northern soul. They are known for having the longest band name in Beijing, and constantly brewing up fresh pots of funky elevated jams that feature the caramel vocals of Tavey Lean and a sweet as nectar horn and rhythm section. This weekend they will be blasting out the best of their repertoire from 10.30pm till who knows when. These guys are great, so don’t miss it.

New Noise is excited to bring in San Diego based post-rock unit The Album Leaf, on May 31 at Yugong Yishan. Centered mainly around the musical dynamo Jimmy LaValle, it is very much a fusion of styles that blend together in beautiful instrumentals, utilizing both electric and acoustic sounds. This great musical event will be supported by Me:mo. Expect a magical evening of tunes and live visuals to get you in the groovy. Highly recommended for fans of Sigur Rós, Four Tet and múm.
