It's Getting Hot In Here: Annual Chili Eating Contest Preparation Tips

Eating contests are the ultimate in human tournaments, in what other competition do people take the most basic of survival instincts and engorge it to its stomach-churning limits? Next week on June 28 to celebrate Canada Day the Beijinger is hosting its annual chili eating contest – a brutal afternoon where ten competitors go mouth-to-mouth trying to swallow as many peppers as humanly possible in three minutes.

While our competitors will be expected to sweat it out, we’re going to be a little gentle and not feed them any of these. That's not to say that they may want to numb, and in some cases all-out burn off, their tastebuds in preparation for the big event. Behold, the world’s hottest chilies measured in scoville units (SHU):

5. Pod Douglah
Peaking at a scoville rating of 1,853,936 SHU this chili boasts a surprisingly appealing flavor along with its furnace mimicking nature, and is often added to food by those crazy few who enjoy searing their insides.

4. Pot Primo
Primo might not be the most adequate word for this chili (scorching, perhaps?) Coming in at 1,900,000 SHU this fire engine red ball of pain will have you dialing 119 quicker than you can say fire.

3. Pot Brain Strain
Named after its peculiar brain-shaped design, this 1,900,000 SHU chili will make your insides feel like Pyro from the X-Men with it’s body-frying spiciness (mutant powers not included).

2. Moruga Scorpion
Scorpions may be all the rage at the moment, but the recently dethroned Morgua Scorpion, coming in at 2,000,000 SHU, is more akin to an edible fire-breathing dragon trying to rip your throat out.

1. Carolina Reaper
You know things are serious when you name a chili after Mr. Death himself. At a stomach exploding 2,200,000 SHU this man-made chili is practically asking you to get your affairs in order before attempting a bite. Defeat it and you will become immortal … maybe …

While all positions have been filled, spectators are more than welcome to watch this fiery show at the Canadian International School and ignite our competitors on with words of encouragement. Maybe bring some milk along for standy-by while you're at it.

Capsaicin, an alkaloid found in a pepper’s pod walls and placenta, is the chemical that makes a chili pepper hot.

There has been a Butch T Trinidad Scorpion chilli pepper tested at over 2.22 million scoville units (SHU). Common chilli peppers, like found in the local hot pot are around 5,000 - 8,000 scoville units.

I recommend having a carton of yogurt, ice cream or milk on hand before you taste. Dairy products are among the best cures for extreme mouth burns from peppers, and you do not want to delay getting relief from overeating all the top ten peppers. Take out the seeds and remember to use gloves.

Eat your heart out Sichuan.
