Berko's Afternoon Tea: A Slice of Paris at the Kerry Centre

Do you like red velvet cake? Do you also like cheesecake? Would you like to put them both in the same cake? Of course you would, because you are a rational human being. Well you can have your red velvet cheesecake and eat it at Berko, where it is available by the slice to eat in or take away (from their stores in Galeries Lafayette and the Kerry Centre Office Building). Seriously though, I cannot extol the virtues of this cheesecake enough sweet without being too saccharine, and with that uniquely satisfying heft that comes from a good cheesecake.

You can taste Berko's excellent cheesecake in its mini form as part of their afternoon tea set (RMB 168 per person, RMB 298 per couple), which was the reason I had gone there in the first place. In addition to the cheesecakes, the afternoon tea includes a variety of French-inspired cakes and pastries with summery twists like fresh fruit and green tea. I enjoyed the matcha profiterole and the three-layer chocolate mousse cake with Valrohna chocolate.

Teas come from venerable Parisian brand Mariage Freres. A shout out as well to the funky ceramic tea set from British brand Undergrowth Design, featuring sexy ceramic legs in high heels on the tea pot, cups, and petit four stand.

If you find yourself around the Kerry Centre in need of afternoon tea refreshments and don't fancy the atmosphere of a hotel lobby, then Berko is a sure bet. Just don't leave without trying a piece of that cheesecake.
