Get Crafty with Pop-Up Beijing's Origami Workshop this Sunday

It's pretty safe to say that the paper arts of the West are far inferior to that of East Asia. While as a youth I may have dabbled in things like flick footballs, paper airplanes, and those perverted fortune telling devices (snapdragons) kids use to curse each other with, these can’t compete with the whole bounty of creatures represented in the discourse of Japanese figurative paper arts known as origami.
 

If upping your origami game is something that interests you then you have to check out Pop-Up this Sunday as they give a workshop featuring the tutelage of Surzhåna, an artist and designer who specializes in using origami to design minimalist folding dresses. In this class they will focus on the Kusudama, also know as the “cherry blossom ball.” The Kusudama dates back to ancient Japan when they were originally made from herbs or flowers and used for medicinal purposes. This eventually evolved into an art-form and are now most commonly made as decorations or gifts.
 

This workshop comes just in time to add some decorative flair to your home for Chinese New Year or to demonstrate your creative worth to your significant other throughout the year. The event lasts from 2-4pm this Sunday and costs RMB 125 per person, which includes all of the supplies you need to get started.
