Michelin Star Chef Heads New Casa Talia by Tiago in Raffles City
One of the best new finds for foodies this week is the Michelin-star-chef-supervised Casa Talia by Tiago in Beijing's downtown; a move which makes the restaurant both affordable and easily accessible.
The Tiago team have been busy this year, first expanding their own award-winning Italian restaurant, before going on to soft open this new concept at Dongzhimen's Raffles City on May 30. However, unlike its sister Tiago, Casa Talia has a focus on creative Mediterranean cuisine and cocktails, under the keen supervision of Michelin star chef Corrado Michelazzo.
Michelazzo's time as a chef has been long and prestigious, first working at the three-Michelin Star La Ferme de Mom Pere and George Blanc restaurants in the 90s before receiving his first Michelin star in 2003 for his work at Hotel Bellevue. Since 2013 he has been the executive chef at the one-Michelin star restaurant 10 Corso Como in Shanghai. With all of that under his belt, we most certainly know that we'll be in for a treat at Casa Talia where he has designed the entire menu and will stop by once a month.
Michelazzo never stops surprising with his creativity and endless passion for cooking. “My roots are of course in Italy, but after working in France, and now for more than four years in China, I am truly enjoying crafting a journey through new gastronomic worlds,” said Michelazzo, “I decided to be a chef when I was nine years old.”
Around 52 people can be seated in the elegant and mordern space, with additional seating around the bar for a close-up view of the barista’s and bartender’s moves. Just like Tiago, Casa Talia prides itself on using the best the ingredients from around the world, such as Gillardeau oysters, Cinco Jotas ham from Spain, Boston lobsters from Canada, Australian Angus grain-fed beef, and codfish from Iceland. The quality shines through in the dishes, and the effort that owner Katie Li and her team have put into making each course like an affordable piece of edible artwork is evident, a meal costing between RMB 120 and 150 per person.
One of their signature dishes is a particular type of tiramisu, entirely different to that of the beloved tiramisu at Tiago. Upon ordering the dessert, a chef will come to you and make it at the table using liquid nitrogen, making for quite the spectacle.
Expect the menu to feature Mediterranean staples like paellas, creative salads, and tapas by the single serving or by the plate for sharing.
There’s also a fine selection of wines, hand-poured coffees, creative cocktails, and sangria to pair with the food. The restaurant officially opens around mid-June, at which point we'll rush over and try as much as we humanly can.
