Beijing Beats: Tadeo, RL Grime, Hologram Dreams, Edna Ether, Red Light Radio, and Dance Olympics

Beijing Beats brings you the best in Beijing nightlife each weekend so that you can soothe the woes of a long and stressful week with some out-of-body gyrating and some experiences you'd rather forget come Monday. Check the weekend's full list of nightlife events here.

Friday, May 10

Tadeo
Beijing's Blackout crew invites the Madrid DJ, producer, and manager of Cyclical Tracks label, Tadeo (pictured at top), to Lantern for a night of his signature forays into experimental techno. In his search for the dark, hypnotic, and creative, Tadeo will be backed by Rhom Omit and Weng Weng. RMB 80, RMB 50 (advance). 10pm doors. Lantern

RL Grime
Remix maestro of American trap, grime, and bass, producer and DJ RL Grime has attracted a following by spinning hits into sometimes huge, sometimes blissed-out bass anthems. As such, big drops, big wompwompwomps, and lots of jumping await One Third this Friday. RMB 120 (advance, includes one drink). 10pm doors. One Third

Private Records pres. Italo Disco Legacy
Zhao Dai gets a start to the weekend with a film-party doubleheader, kicking off with a screening of the wild 1984 movie Italo Disco followed by sets from Berlin-based DJs Jay (Private Records), otherwise Detroit techno devotee Sandra Leidecker, and Tokyo's Peach on Fuse. Price TBA. 8.30pm (screening), 10pm (DJ night). Zhao Dai

Hologram Dreams
Dada Shanghai's night Hologram Dreams comes to Beijing, making, as the organizes put it, a "voyage from funk into the future..." What that means in terms of music is a glossy mix of city-pop, Italo disco, Chicago house, and new wave from DJs Heatwolves and Ozone. There'll also be anime visuals to keep you bobbing along. RMB 30. 10pm doors. Dada

Tropicalismo X Europe Day
The mercury continues to climb, which means it's best to seek the outdoor spots before it's too late. Migas has just the setup, this weekend dousing its terrace in the sounds of Tropicalismo courtesy of resident DJ G4. To accompany the smooth beats, there'll also be palm trees, mojitos, flower prints, and shaking hips aplenty. Free. 10pm doors. Migas Mercado

Saturday, May 11

Red Light Radio
Starting at 3pm and running through to 10pm at the Agrilandia Italian Beijing Farm, Amsterdam's Red Light Radio crew will then make their way to Lantern for an all-night afterparty at Lantern. DJs Juan Granados, Raffal and Eva Xu, Soulseek, Juan Pablo, and Romanowitsch take to the decks alongside Lantern regulars Sun Meng, Nigls, Ou Yang, Hamoudeh, and Weng Weng for what is undoubtedly the longest party this weekend. RMB 100. 11pm. Lantern

Edna Ether
Escape the heat this Saturday with the latest night from the Pretty Cold collective, who welcome back Californian DJ Edna Ether for a night of riffing on dissonant themes of dark romanticism, alienation, body horror, and the inevitable collapse of post-industrial society. Heavy! Regular Pretty Cold DJs Kyle Page, Xu Ran, and Zeïn also perform. Price TBA. 10pm doors. Dada

Ecstatic Dance Beijing
Alternatively, get a really early start on Saturday with this ecstatic dance event. What's ecstatic dance exactly? We're told it's "free-form movement that makes you feel good ... in a judgment-free space." Sounds like a regular club night to me! Head along and stick around for refreshments and bites afterward. RMB 120. 3-6pm. Destination

Sunday, May 12

Dance Olympics
Not had your dance fill come Sunday? The Dance Olympics at Mao should finish you off. Whack on your best tracksuit and head west where NoMercy, DJ H.Y.B, and David’s L!ve will judge dancers on their best moves to a mix of techno, trance, grime, club trax, footwork, and more. RMB 100, RMB 80 (advance). 8pm. Mao Livehouse Wukesong
