5 Things to Taste, Smell, Touch, Hear, and See, Apr 26-28

Beijing can be an overstimulating place to live, to say the least. Let’s be real: sometimes even our sixth sense (the one that tells you when that stick of chuan'r will make you sick for the next two days) gets a decent workout. With such a wide variety of events, restaurants, and gigs to attend, we suggest bathing each of your five senses in one, if not all, of the nourishing goings-on below.

Taste

Apr 27: Pop-Up Chef Series
Missing your mamma's homemade fried chicken and pulled pork? Luckily, The Orchid Lodge is going strong with their pop-up chef series, this Saturday hosting Southern Mama, who will make the next best thing with their range of hearty southern dishes. Besides the aforementioned, participants will also be served bread pudding, mac and cheese, and other sinful but delicious dishes. Best of all, the whole menu is also available in vegan – talk about a plot twist! RMB 178 (lunch), RMB 248 dinner). Noon (lunch), 7pm (dinner). The Orchid

Smell

Apr 27: Coffee Brewing Workshop
Arcade is moving to Sanlitun but what is a closing without a handful of blowout of events. After their closing-dedicated party on Friday, head back over on Saturday to treat your aching head with a proper coffee session where you'll learn about the magic behind brewing as well as the practical skills necessary to do it at home. After the strenuous labor of brewing is over, lay back with the fruits of your work and a plate of breakfast. 11am-2pm. RMB 250, RMB 130 (advance). Hatchery Arcade

Touch

Apr 27: Murder Mystery Gala
Step up your murder mystery dinner game with a gala at the Hilton Hotel. This year’s Murder Mystery night is inspired by the '80s: think classic Kevin Bacon movies, Footloose, plus a gruesome murder element to boot. Charming. Slip into your sleekest ball gowns from the times past and get dancing... And keep an eye out for murderers, of course. RMB 550. 7pm. Hilton Hotel

Hear

Apr 28: Spittoon's The Shimmering Wall
Beijing's local literary collective extraordinaire, Spittoon, has gone international since one of their key members moved to Sweden, and this Sunday, they'll reconnect with a cross-cultural hobnobbing via a joint webcast from the respective capitals. There'll also be experimental music and poetry from various members of this multitalented community. 9pm. RMB 60, RMB 50 (advance). DDC

See

Apr 28: "River Blue" Screening
While we grind our teeth every time somebody throws away a plastic cup or bag, one of the most polluting industries in the world is actually the fashion industry. As part of Fashion Revolution Week, The Bookworm will screen River Blue, a documentary that follows an international river conservationist Mark Angelo, and reveals the destructive impact that the fashion industry is having on rivers around the world. Join in the group discussion after the movie to share tips and tricks on sustainable consumption. RMB 70, RMB 50 (advance). 8pm. The Bookworm
