Have Your Bing and Eat it Too at The Hutong's Bǐng Festival, Oct 15
In its simplest form, the Chinese character 饼 bǐng means a round flat pancake. A plain old bing on its own is pretty good, but start adding other characters and you get more variety.
There’s 牛肉饼 niúròubǐng – beef-filled pancakes, global varieties like 墨西哥薄饼 Mòxīgē báobǐng – aka tortillas, and even some with different characters like 春卷 chūnjuǎn – aka spring rolls. This Saturday, you’ll have the chance to try all these and more at Bǐng Festival.
Organized by The Hutong, the Beixinqiao-based Chinese cooking and culture experts, Bǐng Festival is a one day event celebrating all things bing.
Guests will be able to try their hand at cooking spring rolls, tortillas, onion pancakes – a variety of filled wrap popular in northern China – and many more, whether they be wrapped up or just eaten on their own.
You’ll also be able to experiment with fillings as well. While there will be set fillings for tacos and onion pancakes, Hutong chef Yao says she’ll be cooking up 麻婆豆腐 Mápó Dòufu, 宫保鸡丁 Gōngbǎo Jīdīng (Kungpao Chicken), and 京酱肉丝 Jīngjiàng Ròusī (shredded pork in sweet bean sauce) for guests to try with their bing.
If you’re crazy for bing or a little bing-curious, then definitely check it out this Saturday. Seats are limited, so be sure to sign up today!
