First Photos of Huge Tomb Complex Discovered Near Beijing

Beijingers have gotten their first look at what's been described as a "massive" tomb complex discovered in the city's suburban Daxing District.

The photos offer a bit of an underwhelming look at the series of 129 tombs found during a construction project. The site was first used in the Eastern Han Dynasty in 25 C.E., up until 1125 C.E. in the Liao Dynasty, and covers 70 hectares – considered "rare" for its scope and the length of time the site was used.

Discovery of the Daxing site was first reported in March, but was actually found in 2014. Archaeologists from the city's Institute of Cultural Heritage are currently working on the site.

We're really hoping this eventually becomes part of Beijing's already rich archaeological offerings and that it will be opened to the public.
