When Burgers Aren't Enough: 3sums Introduces Pizza, Lewison Heads to Home Plate

We've always been seeing triple at 3sums, thanks to an expansive menu of sliders meant to be enjoyed in sets of three, but recent changes in the kitchen means dining in at the burger joint just got three times better.

Zach Lewison left 3sums earlier this month and will head up the kitchen in the new Home Plate BBQ location that co-owners Adam Murray and Seth Grossman will be opening in Sanlitun. We'll have to wait on that until the fall, but until then, we have Jerry Guo's new slew of concepts to look forward to.

In the past week, Guo has added fresh juice to the drinks menu, including an orange, carrot and ginger option, as well as smoothies, with flavors like watermelon lychee. He's also now offering "authentic American milkshakes" – we'll have to find out if their recipe can live up to this tasty beverage in Taikoo Li North.

Guo said he plans to add mini-pizzas sometime within the next few weeks – watch out for our official notice in Capital Bites. They'll be served as a "3sum," just like the burgers. Here's an exclusive preview of what toppings he'll have on offer:

1. the spicy lover - soppressata (a spicy salami), sauteed garlic, red peppers, jalapenos
2. the meat lover - pepperoni, ham, salami, basil
3. the umami lover - portobellos, sauteed eggplants, caramelized onions
4. the green lover - basil pesto, green peppers, cherry tomatoes, spinach, arugula, parsley
5. the tropical lover - pineapple, ham, jalapenos
6. the savory lover - bacon, quail eggs, arugula, cherry tomatoes
7. the cheese lover - feta, blue cheese, nacho cheese, parmesan, arugula, basil
8. the sophisticated lover - fontina, prosciutto, sauteed pears, arugula
9. the classic lover - mozzarella, tomatoes, pesto, basil, fresh marinara sauce

Following mini pizzas, Guo says 3sums will introduce mini steak filets of beef, chicken, or lamb paired with sauces like herbs de provence, smokehouse barbecue, argentine chimichurri, chipotle rub, thai-style marinade, santa-maria salsa, and aioli.

You can give it all a try at a 20 percent summer discount, which means you'll get a 3sums of mini burgers, a side of fries and a drink for RMB 48 or a 3sum of pizza for RMB 48.

Definitely not intentional. "Three times better" was referring to three times as many dining options (burgers, pizza and steaks as opposed to only burgers). A poor paragraph transition on my part. Both Jerry Guo and Zach Lewison are clearly very talented chefs who are bringing new and exciting food options to Beijing (check out the Home Plate article if you haven't already), and my main intention is to let readers know this.

"...recent changes in the kitchen means [sic] dining in at the burger joint just got three times better."

And that's immediately followed by...

"Zach Lewison left 3sums earlier this month..."

Intentional juxtaposition?
