More on the SantaCon Weekend
Yesterday we blogged about a disturbance at Tiananmen that took place over the weekend as a hundred Santas posed for a group shot on the Square. New reports are coming in about what actually occurred at Tiananmen, along with plenty about the rest of the crawl as SantaCon made its merry way around the city and left a trail of white beards and empty beer bottles in its wake.
BeijingDaze posted today about the SantaCon stop over on Tiananmen, and claims that the cause of the commotion was an unruly photographer rather than overly zealous security. According to Daze the lads in uniform were in fact “extremely polite” – until one “dick” got into a shoving match with a guard.
Beijing Boyce offered a fuller picture of the mayhem that was to be had in Santa suits as people mix that wonderful concoction of 1/3 Christmas spirit and 2/3 alcohol. Boyce offers his Christmas list of who was naughty and nice, as well as a few parts of the day that were nutty and nasty.

Re: More on the SantaCon Weekend
In my experience (back in way more sensitive 2008), the guards were curious and amused. Yes, they questioned us and kept watch, but the questioning was pretty mild: Are you planning to cause trouble? No. Do you have presents? Erm . . .

Re: More on the SantaCon Weekend
Give the media credit for having some of ye olde Christmas spirit. Let's go to the play by play...
1. An accredited journalist causes the entire ruckus at Tiananmen Square and screws things up for the more than 100 people dressed as Santa.
2. This makes for a nice story--think "Chinese Grinches dash Christmas plans of Santas!"--for other media outlets.
3. The outlets then give us anonymous sources that for all we know might well include the guy who started it all in the first place.
That's what I call giving...
Cheers, Boyce
