EAT: 10 Corso Como Welcomes Two Michelin-Starred Chef, Moka Bros Opens in The Place
We're big fans of multi-brand concept store 10 Corso Como (although our wallets are less so) and our love is only confirmed when they bring big-name chefs like Fulvio Pierangelini to town. For those who don't know, Pierangelini gained two Michelin stars for his restaurant Il Gambero Rosso, set in a small Tuscan seaside town (pictured above). Before he closed the restaurant suddenly in 2008 at the height of his success, Pierangelini's creative yet simple cooking was considered fundamental to the evolution of modern Italian cuisine. The chef is notoriously low key, so food fanatics shouldn't miss this chance to get close to one of the greats. Pierangelini will be in the kitchen at 10 Corso Como cooking lunch (RMB 388, three courses) on October 28, and lunch and dinner (RMB 888, five courses) on October 29.
Across town, Moka Bros have just opened their third Beijing branch at The Place. We're super happy to see homegrown brands successfully expanding and we're sure that CBD denizens will be glad to have a place to get their smoothie and grain bowl fix.
The opening of Beijing Duck magnate Da Dong's fast food duckburger joint in China Central Place is apparently a smash hit. Since opening last Wednesday, the operation that slings roast duck with Western fast food presentation and prices has regularly had a 20 minute line out the door. Is this a passing fad or the start of a new fast food revolution? Only time will tell.
Italian fine fare purveyors Opera Bombana have opened a pizza-by-the-slice counter in Parkview Green called PizzaView. Their Roman style thin crust creations feature dough made of imported flour which is leavened for 36 hours using a “mother” yeast starter that traces its origins to Pinot Grigio grapes from Venice. Talk about a pedigree!
Speaking of pizza, voting in the first round of the Beijinger's 2015 Pizza Cup opened this weekend, so time has come for you to give us your two cents on the city's best pizzas. Want to give us more than two cents? Give us your more detailed and nuanced perspectives in our Pizza My Mind series – easily submitted via this online form here.
Shuangjing watering hole Plan B has expanded their menu of delectable pub grub to include fish tacos and clam chowder served in bread bowls. They've declared Tuesdays their fish taco nights, where you can feast out on a pair of tacos filled with tilapia fillets dressed with lettuce, tomato, onion, cilantro and Plan B's housemade garlic-basil sauce for RMB 40. If the tacos are anywhere as good as their burgers, than its worth the trip.
If you're more into dining than partying, there are plenty of spooky Halloween dining events around town:
- Take the kids for Halloween brunch at Feast. While you chow down on their semi-buffet brunch menu, the Feast staff will take the kids trick or treating, or help them to get their faces painted.
- Halloween is "bloody steak night" at O'Steak. Feast on a menu of frankly terrifying "virgin's head tartare," "grilled newborn chops," and "ogre bile creme brule." Glasses of fresh blood (we're assuming – hoping – that means red wine) are buy-one-get-one free.
- VIC at Sofitel Wanda has an evening Halloween buffet spectacular with a great price for a 5-star: RMB 750 for two parents and a kid.
- The Schoolhouse at Mutianyu's annual Jack-o-Lantern carving contest is always a highlight, and worth traveling out of your way for.
- Check out our complete list of over 80 parties around town, many with a dining theme, here.
