EAT: Revisiting the Menu at Modernista, New Zealand-Serbia Fusion Dinner, Taco Crawl
EAT: Your bite-sized guide to the best eats to be had in Beijing this week.
Revisiting the dinner menu at Modernista
There's a special kind of joy in revisiting an old favorite restaurant and finding that it's not only as good as you remember but better. So it is with Modernista, whose restaurant often flies under the radar compared to its bar and events venue, but is worth a visit all of its own. The menu focuses on modern tapas, reflective of the restaurant team's international background. For example, one of the standout dishes is a potato croquette stuffed with sweet-savoury red wine-braised duck, shaped to look like a duck drumstick. Classic flavors abound too, in the form of snackable pinxtos (pictured in lead blog image) and delicious dish of fried potatoes topped with Serrano ham and a poached egg. Modernista is open for dinner daily from 6pm.
Jan 8: New Zealand and Serbian fusion dinner
Join The Hutong for a taste of fusion holiday-themed food merging the cuisines of Serbia and New Zealand. While very different, the two cuisines have a surprising number of similar aspects and are both delicious. The food will be prepared and introduced by chef Ana, who was born and raised in Serbia, then moved to New Zealand 20 years ago. The menu includes dishes like a New Zealand-style party cheese ball with crackers, Serbian savory pastries, and roast lamb, a staple of both cuisines. Dinner is priced at RMB 398 per person.
Jan 15: Taco Crawl — just a few spaces left!
As we mentioned on in our recent interview with agave spirits ambassador and owner of Pebbles Courtyard, Ray Heng, several of the city's best Mexican restaurants are banding together on Jan 15 to hold Beijing's first taco crawl. Over the course of six hours, you'll visit eight venues, starting at Pebbles and ending at El Barrio in Sanlitun, enjoying a taco and a drink at each stop. Tickets are priced at RMB 398 per person (including all food, drinks, and transportation). Scan the QR code on the poster above to book, but hurry — there are only a few places left!
